Supporting Research and Neuroscience
- Dr. Andrew Huberman (Stanford neuroscientist) explains that the RAS helps regulate wakefulness and attention by syncing with the locus coeruleus (which releases norepinephrine for focus).
- Neuropsychology studies show that goal-directed behavior increases RAS activity. When participants were told to look for red cars or specific faces, their RAS selectively enhanced their ability to pick out those elements in cluttered environments.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses the principle of cognitive filtering, which is directly tied to how the RAS prioritizes thoughts. Changing your self-talk literally changes your experience of reality.
- In psychological priming experiments, participants who focused on success-related words or visualized positive outcomes performed significantly better than those who did not. This reflects how the RAS “tags” certain outcomes as high-priority.
